Honest, soulful, empowering…all words to describe singer/songwriter Shelly Bhushan. Gifted with an incredibly powerful voice, Shelly draws on a depth of emotion that ranges from desire to defiance, longing to exhilaration. It’s as if her soul reaches out to yours when you hear her sing. It’s real, she’s real, without a trace of pretentiousness.
Born and raised in Texas by immigrant parents, she’s half Indian and half Mexican. Shelly left Texas to find a new path, a new perspective and to become a singer. The sparkling asphalt of NYC felt like a yellow-brick road leading to her destiny. With no job or place to live or job… just 2 suitcases, Shelly bought a one way ticket to front a soul-rock band led by a group of strangers she found listed in The Village Voice. The band started garnering label attention, was nominated for the first Independent American Music Award, but like all things that rise, they fall. The band broke up.
Shelly got herself together and started a new musical journey of her own. She had no songwriting experience or understanding on how to be a band-leader. She taught herself to play the guitar and found a group of musicians (who turned into family) willing to help her with her dream. Over the course of the next decade, Shelly produced 4 studio albums, played at such clubs as The Rockwood Music Hall, Joe’s Pub, The Bitter End, The Apollo and many others. Additionally, Shelly was awarded the prestigious Abe Olman Scholarship Award from the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame for her songwriting abilities, particularly on her song “Beautiful Me; in addition to accolades from the Song Hall for her song, “Too Hard to Fall.”
Shelly’s music is a mixture and hybrid (like her) of those who came before her. Shelly somehow manages that rare balancing act of being both bold, brassy and soulful while maintaining a uniquely introspective and poetic voice that paints an honest perspective of life in all of its agonies and ecstasies. Rooted in melody, Shelly is heavily influenced by the Funk, Soul and R&B greats of the past in addition to the tapestry of pop and alt/indie rock music that cradled her youth.
Her unique musical journey has led Shelly Bhushan to where she is today, allowing her to bring her listeners to places not often visited in popular music. Hers is a powerful singing and songwriting voice that demands to be heard.
Shelly’s embarking on releasing a string of new material in 2025 as a solo artist in addition to releasing a full length album with her duo project, The Beveled Edges. Stay tuned.
